QEP/Improving Disciplinary Writing (IDW) Progress Report (January 2020)

To date, ODU's QEP: Improving Disciplinary Writing (IDW) Program has:

 

  • Held twenty-three (at least two each term since 2012) five-day workshops in which 407 full-time faculty members were taught how to integrate "write-to-learn" practices into their upper-division undergraduate (300- and 400-level) courses. Since attending the IDW Workshops, these faculty members have reached at least 23,704 students at ODU.

 

  • Continued to support writing in academic programs by awarding the Action Project internal grants with $439,604 awarded in grant funds since 2013. Among other departments and programs, grants have been awarded in all six colleges to benefit those in the Counseling and Human Services, Biology, Psychology, Biology, English, Teaching and Learning Modeling, Simulation and Visualization Engineering, Human Movement Services and Information Technology and Decision Sciences departments.

 

  • Conducted IDW Assessment Summits in which 874 written artifacts, randomly selected from courses taught by faculty who attended the IDW Workshops, were assessed based on ODU's IDW Writing Rubric. These summits help refine the IDW workshops, provide continuous feedback to faculty working to improve disciplinary writing and begin to address the student learning outcomes in writing across the curriculum at the university.

 

  • Continued to market the importance of IDW by engaging in broad-based campus outreach. For instance, the IDW Weekly Writing Tips are sent to faculty members each week during the fall and spring semesters to help provide campus constituents with practical, interesting ways to integrate writing into the classroom without burdening themselves with extra grading.

 

  • In fall 2014, in partnership with Academic Enhancement, the IDW program launched the Faculty Writing Studio, which supports all ODU faculty members in their research and writing endeavors.
